The initial appointment is the same for every new adult patient, whether you’re seeking care for anxiety, depression, mood disorders, psychoses, OCD, PTSD, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or ADHD, or continuity of ADHD care. If your psychiatrist recommends further ADHD assessment, you then book a 30-minute ADHD assessment review to go through your questionnaires. An ADHD diagnosis isn’t guaranteed.

A GP can refer a child or adolescent for a one-off Item 291 assessment: your psychiatrist sends the GP a detailed treatment plan, and care continues with the GP. For ADHD, ongoing prescribing with the GP depends on their state’s rules.

* DVA (rural patients) appointments are booked as a general mental health appointment and need a Medicare Item 291.
** Appointments for autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability are booked as an ADHD assessment.
A credit card is needed to secure your booking.
This policy also applies to 291 and rural DVA appointments; cancellation fees are charged to the card on file. Cancellation fees aren’t eligible for Medicare rebates.
Rural and remote Australians
We offer bulk-billed MBS Item 291 psychiatric assessments for eligible patients living in Modified Monash Model (MM) 2–7 locations. This includes:
To check your location, enter your address in the Health Workforce Locator and look at the 2019 result for the Modified Monash Model.
Please note: if you move and are no longer eligible, standard fees may apply. A follow-up Item 293 consultation needs a new referral from your GP. A credit card is still needed to secure your appointment, and is only charged a fee if you cancel outside our cancellation policy or miss the appointment.
Medicare
To claim a Medicare rebate, you need a current referral: GP referrals must be dated within 12 months of your appointment, and specialist referrals within 3 months. You must be in Australia at the time of your appointment.
If you’ve seen a psychiatrist in the last 12 months, please check with Medicare which rebates are available to you. We can’t obtain new referrals for you or backdate rebates.
We process your Medicare rebate the working day after your appointment. Medicare takes up to 72 hours and pays the rebate into your nominated bank account. If it doesn’t arrive, please contact Medicare to check your eligibility and account details.
Rebates can’t be claimed for cancelled bookings.
Once you reach the annual threshold, Medicare may pay 80% of your out-of-pocket costs for eligible out-of-hospital services (up to benefit caps), on top of your usual rebate.
Families need to register with Medicare to combine their costs. Thresholds reset on 1 January. See Services Australia.
New patients
You’ll need a referral from your GP or specialist. Send it to us and our team will match you with a psychiatrist and send your intake forms. Not sure about something? Call or email us.
